What happens when we refuse to speak out?
"We refuse to talk , to avoid being disgraced ,or being shout at , when we talk, nobody believes us instead they shout at us" These are the words of Maria a rape victim . Rape is a type of sexual assault usually involving sexual intercourse or other forms of sexual penetration carried out against a person without that person's consent. The act may be carried out by physical force, coercion, abuse of authority, or against a person who is incapable of giving valid consent, such as one who is unconscious, incapacitated, has an intellectual disability or is below the legal age of consent.
UNICEF reported in 2015 that one in four girls and one in ten boys in Nigeria had experienced sexual violence before the age of 18. According to a survey by Positive Action for Treatment Access, over 31.4 percent of girls there said that their first sexual encounter had been rape or forced sex of some kind.
Every rape victim would never be the same after the incident , It has Psychological effects on an individual; it makes one mentally down and not think the way humans think for instance if Maria is torn apart by Uncle Uche , in his room at noon , she would have this special hatred for every Uche she would know sometimes in the future. if she tell her mom is either she beats her so the best thing is to let it stay in her mind and not share it to anyone.
And also Physiological effects; it changes the mood of any victim for instance if a victim will always be sad and down , for instance you would hardly see them smile and also that trauma would allow them be an introvert, if we refuse it would have a permanent scar in the mind of an individual. Every female child has been abused in a way or another.
Rape is a serious issue that we need to deal with in our society, let us all try to embrace any rape victims and not shout or blame them for not wearing a cloth instead we should help them fight for justice.
