Sports Chelsea and Man Utd 'locked in a transfer battle for Dean Henderson
Chelsea are 'locked in a transfer battle' for Manchester United's Dean Henderson, according to reports.
The young goalkeeper has impressed during his two-year loan spell with Sheffield United and is set to rival Jordan Pickford and Nick Pope to be England's No1 choice at next summer's Euros.
United opened contract extension talks last week after agreeing the 23-year-old could remain with the Blades for the rest of the season. But according to The Sun, Chelsea have thrown a spanner in the works by making clear their intention to tempt the £53million-rated shot-stopper to Stamford Bridge.
Frank Lampard has already secured Timo Werner for next season after it was announced the striker would join the club for a fee of £53million earlier this week.
And the Blues have more funds at their disposal with a goalkeeper seen as a priority following a poor season for Kepa Arrizabalaga.
Chelsea are hopeful that they could sway Henderson by offering him regular football, something he will need if he is to become Gareth Southgate's first choice at international level.
David de Gea is the current No1 for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer but the Spaniard is going through a dip in form.
He was heavily criticised by United legend Roy Keane for failing to keep out Steven Bergwijn's goal on Friday night.
The Irishman said: 'I'm sick to death of this goalkeeper.
'I would be fighting him at half time, I would be swinging punches. This is an established international goalkeeper.'
But De Gea is thought to retain Solskjaer's backing and Henderson could face a season as second-choice or another loan spell if he extends his contract at United.
That reality could make Chelsea a tempting proposition with the guarantee he would be the club's undisputed No1.
