Sports Pep Guardiola fears Sergio Aguero could miss the rest of the season after injuring his knee

Pep Guardiola fears Sergio Aguero could miss the rest of this season with a knee injury.

Aguero limped out of last night’s rout of Burnley after winning a penalty following Ben Mee’s trip just before half-time. The Argentine has been carrying a niggle in his left knee since City returned to training last month and will undergo tests at the training ground on Tuesday.

Guardiola ruled him out for the next few weeks – and definitely Sunday’s FA Cup quarter final at Newcastle.

‘It doesn’t look good,’ he said. ‘He felt something but it doesn’t look good for this season.

‘The doctor (Max Sala) says it will take time. A few games out for sure but maybe tomorrow the tests he will get good news. We will see.’

The Premier League finishes on July 26, with City facing Real Madrid in their Champions League last-16 second leg just under a fortnight later.

Guardiola – who warned of injuries brought on by Project Restart last week - can call upon Gabriel Jesus in Aguero’s absence, while he has used Raheem Sterling, Kevin De Bruyne and Bernardo Silva in the false nine position in the past.

The 32-year-old’s injury was the only sour note for City after a victory that Phil Foden described as his best performance for the club.

Foden scored twice and had a significant hand in two others, with his manager backing him to fill David Silva’s shoes when the veteran departs the Etihad Stadium in August.

‘David is difficult to replace, for what he has done,’ Guardiola added. ‘But we have a young City fan who every time he plays brings something unique. Every time he plays well.

‘When David said it was his last year, we said in this position we have Phil. In the next decade, 15 years, he will be an outstanding player for us.

‘I’ve seen his behaviour when he doesn’t play - never a bad face. When you have a bad face you can’t improve. He deserves to be part of this squad. Every minute he gets is well deserved.’

Although preferred in central areas, Foden has been backed to fill in on the left wing should Leroy Sane finalise a move to Bayern Munich.

‘The guys who understand the game can play anywhere and Phil is one of them,’ Guardiola said. ‘He’s not a winger but don’t forget he won the (Under 17) World Cup playing as a right winger.’
