Sports EPL urges clubs to warn fans to stay away after Liverpool fans celebrated
The Premier League has urged clubs to step up their campaigns to keep fans away from grounds.
On Saturday, hours after thousands of Liverpool fans gathered in the city’s centre to celebrate the Premier League title, top-flight officials wrote to every club.
They asked them to repeat and reinforce the message that mass gatherings should not happen.
Meanwhile, local authorities and police on Merseyside are holding meetings around arrangements for outside Anfield for Liverpool’s remaining home fixtures — but there are no plans for games to be moved.
Liverpool are expecting to be presented with the trophy after their last home match of the season — the visit of Chelsea.
The Premier League’s email to clubs, seen by Sportsmail, notes the scenes at Bournemouth beach last week, where crowds flocked during searing temperatures. It adds that clubs should increase the prominence of existing fan safety messages.
On Monday, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp wrote an open letter to the Liverpool Echo in which he addressed the large gatherings on Friday night.
Klopp wrote: ‘Please celebrate but in a safe way and in private settings, whereby we do not risk spreading this awful disease further in our community.’
The Premier League have returned one positive test for Covid-19 for a second week running since the resumption of play. Between last Monday and Sunday, 2,250 tests were conducted with one unnamed individual now self-isolating.
