Sports Van Dijk 'set to sign a new five-year Liverpool deal worth £220,000-a-week

Virgil van Dijk is set to become the highest paid player in Liverpool history after agreeing a £220,000-a-week deal.

The Holland international will sign a five-year contract worth £57million according to The Sun, when Liverpool seal the Premier League title.

It ends any fears of the 28-year-old signing for French giants Paris Saint-Germain who have made it known that they want to sign him.

Van Dijk currently earns £180,000 a week and could have earned another £100,000 on top of that if he had signed for Thomas Tuchel's side.

The former Southampton defender is understood to be happy with the £40,000- a week rise that will take him above current top earner Mohamed Salah.

Liverpool superstar Salah currently earns £200,000 a week and will see his team-mate now earn more than him.

Van Dijk signed from Southampton for £75million in what was a world-record fee for a defender at the time in January 2018.

He will sign a contract until the end of the 2024-25 season at least.

The deal is understood to be completed but will not become public knowledge until next month.

Jurgen Klopp is also keen to give Sadio Mane a new contract that would put him on par with Van Dijk.

Mane's contract runs out in three years time and has been in no hurry to accept a £2m-a-year rise since being offered it last November.

Klopp also wants Georginio Wijnaldum to extend his contract with the Holland international only having a year left on his current deal.

Divock Origi's future is believed to be uncertain whilst Xherdan Shaqiri is likely to be sold.

Liverpool restart against Everton a week on Sunday needing only two wins to secure the top-flight title in 30 years.

Klopp saw his side thrash Blackburn Rovers 6-0 at Anfield in a friendly on Thursday.
