Sports Arsenal WILL 'offer David Luiz a one-year extension but to reduce his wages'

Arsenal will reportedly offer David Luiz a one-year extension to his contract, which is due to expire on June 30, but will offer the centre back less than his current £120,000 a week deal.

The 33-year-old defender only signed for the Gunners last summer for £8million, on a one-year contract with a 12-month option.

But with talks stagnating in recent weeks, manager Mikel Arteta is keen to get the Brazilian re-signed, meaning the club could offer Luiz a deal based on appearances and incentives, according to The Mirror.

Both parties are said to be keen to reach a compromise, as the former Chelsea man looks to extend his stay at the Emirates.

Arteta is said to be impressed by Luiz's leadership qualities too - the first-team squad have returned to training ahead of the return of the Premier League on June 17, when the Gunners face champions Manchester City.

Luiz's agent, Kia Joorabchian, has insisted his client is 'very happy' at Arsenal and believes there is a 'very high chance' he signs a new deal before the end of the month.

'He's very happy at Arsenal. He has an extremely good relationship with both the coach and the sporting director,' Joorabchian told Sky Sports.

'He has good relationships all throughout the club, right up to the owner. He respects everybody.

'Arsenal had an option, which expired. We also had a pandemic.

'So the option expired in the middle of the pandemic. We are all very aware of that situation and we are all trying, very slowly, to get back to this "new normal".

'David will sit down with Arsenal before the season begins, have his conversations and they will both decide if he will stay or not. That will come before the season starts.

'The chances are very high [of Luiz being at Arsenal next season]. There is no desire to leave.'
