Sports Tammy Abraham's scoring feats for Chelsea this season have triggered another year on his contract

Tammy Abraham's impressive scoring record this season has triggered another year on his Chelsea contract.

The 22-year-old penned his current deal in 2017 and it was initially due to expire in 2022, raising fears the club may have to rush through a new agreement this summer.

But The Telegraph report that the forward triggered a one-year extension after reaching a set number of appearances and goals this season, meaning he will stay at Stamford Bridge until 2023.

But Chelsea are reportedly still keen to reward the youngster with a longer deal after an impressive season in the Premier League.

The striker is the club's top scorer with 16 goals in 40 games and has also contributed six assists.

The report claims the England international is set for a big pay rise but the extension means neither party are in a panic to start fresh negotiations.

The Blues have tied down several other youngsters to long-term contracts with Mason Mount, Billy Gilmour, Callum Hudson-Odoi, Reece James and Ruben Loftus-Cheek all committing their futures to the club.

Frank Lampard was also relaxed about the striker's contract situation. Following his side's victory over Crystal Palace, he said : 'I think on Tammy's contract, we're not at a critical level with it and I'll leave that between him and the club to discuss that side of it. I don't think it's something in his mind now. It certainly shouldn't be.'

The striker will compete with Timo Werner for a place in the starting XI next season as well as Olivier Giroud who signed a one-year extension before the return of football last month.

Abraham was on the scoresheet at Selhurst Park and could be in-line for his second start since the Premier League's resumption.
