THE UNSEEN
A Short Story by Umar Yakubu
Steven and Blessing are lovers from secondary school, there live in the same street , there go to school together, even do everything together. Steven's Dad Is a retired military man and also a business man , there are aware of his relationship with blessing , she do go to Steven's Mom provision store to help her sometimes and do go to thier house for lectures.
After thier secondary
school , they both agreed to go to the same school so as to always see themselves and to make their bond thicker. At first thier parents do not agree with it because it would make them loose focus and they may end up being a parent at an early stage . " Dad, I want you to believe me , I would never let you down ". Was the song they often sing to thier parents before they allowed them choose it.
They both gained addmission to University of Nigeria , Steven was studying computer science and Blessing's course is Sociology. There spent quality time together, went for parties since they've gained thier autonomy , and do call thier parents everyday. Somedays Steven will even neglect his own classes to attend her's . They wanted staying together but thier parents declined, but it didn't stop them from being together. After the first semester they travelled home together in a luxurious bus and talked about many things , the kids they would have together, the location of their honeymoon, and where they would have thier vacation. Thier love seems to be growing day by day without no sign of crack.
At the beginning of the next semester, Blessing met David a course mate ,and gradually they became best friends , they do communicate in classes and outside classes. Suddenly her attitude changed , she doesn't visit Steven anymore , she doesn't call him . Although Steve do call and they do communicate well. On a lovely Saturday afternoon , she already promised Steven he would come to his place as she did not come so Steven decided to go check her on getting there he saw David laying on her bed with his leg crossed pressing his phone .
" Hey! who are you? Why would you just run into someones room like that" David shouted
" My man , chill I'm her....boy..." Before he could complete his words Blessing came out of the kitchen with an Ankara wrapped around her waist with a visible singlet showing her boobs, and gave him a walk hug .
" Dave he is my boyfriend" she said .
"Who is he?" Asked Steven in a low voice he's still felling the bouncy breast and warm hands wrapped around him .
" My friend " she said
" But you never told me about him"
"We wanted com...." She said as David cuts them short .
" I think I'm done , blessing we will meet at school Monday, I will be leaving now" he said as he slammed the door. Steven complained bitterly about her dressing and warn her not to accommodate any guy to her home " anything can happen , and I don't want to loose you".
Few months past and this time the semester exam is near , Blessing did not use to pick her calls again, she doesn't reply her chats , not always around , Steven do sacrifice his time to look for her but all to no avail . When he was coming back he saw her friend who told him that there would be class 2 afternoon , he had class that same time but he would rather miss a whole semester than to miss the girl. At about 1:20 he got to the lecture hall waiting on Blessing , he kept on looking at everybody walking in
" abi Dem don kidnap this girl ni , her Papa go kill me " Steven shouting aloud .
Few minutes later at about 1:50 she walks in gracefully with David a terrible good-looking young man . He quickly walks up to them
" Blessing , where have you been na, I have ...... What's up dave ?" He said.
" I am fine , been looking for you too, we need to talk " said Blessing as Dave left them and went to his sit.
" Let's make it after this class" siad blessing
" No tell me now , hope it is fine " Steven said calmly . She quickly gave David her bag and whisper to him , sure it would be about test or attendance. Dave gave a sly smile and she left. They both walked he was curious to ask what's wrong she said there should look for a silent place , finally they went to the school cafeteria .
" Steven , I have been avoiding you since , because of my new boyfriend....oh sorry , I have fallen in love for my course mate , and I cannot continue with you ...sorry " she said with a cautious smile .
Hearing this , his head just kept on ringing , water just rushing out his body and his face is as red as broda Michel the agbero in Lagos . " No...NO...No... You can't do this , if I'm wrong in any way please forgive me , if you fall for him stand up na" Steven a well repected man in the cafeteria , person wey dey buy food for everybody , kneel down to beg his loml who is been taken away , some passerby remove thier phone and start recording , But oga Steven did not even shake anything for my baby.
" Stop disgracing me , I told you the truth " said Blessing as she stood up and rushed to class.
Steven watched as she walks away, he quickly stood up, look at the time it's over 30 min and he rushed to his class , he wasn't allowed in and there wrote test . He got home laid on the bed broke the news to his parents .
He begged her for months and he decided to let her be , This made a big difference to his school life, when the result cane out he had 2 carry overs and C decorated over his results and he nevrr for once had a CO , after he checked the result he said " I'm done with love ".
